What Accessories Are Covered by the Bike to Work Scheme?

by Amanda Lemos 23 Jul 2026
What Accessories Are Covered by the Bike to Work Scheme?

Bike to Work Scheme can help you save money on more than just a new electric bike. Approved cycling safety equipment can also be included in your order, allowing you to prepare for safer and more practical journeys to work.

Eligible Bike to Work Scheme accessories in Ireland include helmets, lights, locks, panniers, pumps and selected repair equipment. However, not every cycling accessory qualifies, and Revenue’s guidance states that approved safety equipment must be purchased with the bicycle.

In this guide, we explain which Cycle to Work accessories are covered, whether helmets, lights and locks qualify, and how to include accessories in your Pogo Cycles quotation.

Can You Buy Accessories Through the Bike to Work Scheme?

Yes. Approved bicycle safety equipment can be included as part of a Bike to Work Scheme purchase.

The accessories should be included in the quotation or invoice submitted to your employer. Your bicycle and approved equipment will count towards the total value of your scheme order.

You can learn more about the application process through the Pogo Cycles Bike to Work Scheme page.

For a broader overview of eligible purchases, read our guide to what you can buy with the Bike to Work Scheme.

Which Bike to Work Scheme Accessories Are Covered?

The Irish Bike to Work Scheme covers specific types of bicycle safety equipment when they are purchased with an eligible bicycle or electric bike.  Approved equipment includes:

  • Cycling helmets that meet the relevant European safety standard
  • Bells and bulb horns
  • Front and rear bike lights
  • Dynamo light systems
  • Bicycle mirrors
  • Mudguards and skirt guards
  • Cycle clips and dress guards
  • Panniers, luggage carriers and straps
  • Bicycle locks and chains
  • Bicycle pumps
  • Puncture repair kits
  • Cycle tool kits
  • Tyre sealant
  • Reflective clothing
  • Front and spoke reflectors

Cycling helmets

A well-fitting cycling helmet is one of the most important accessories to consider when preparing for your commute.

Are helmets covered by the Bike to Work Scheme? Yes. Cycle helmets can be included, provided they conform to European safety standard EN 1078.

When choosing a helmet, consider:

  • The correct size for your head
  • A secure but comfortable fit
  • Adjustable straps
  • Suitable ventilation
  • Reflective or high-visibility features
  • Compatibility with glasses or winter headwear

Browse cycling helmets and protective accessories, or read our guide on how to choose a helmet for your electric bike.

Bike Lights and Reflectors

Good visibility is especially important when commuting early in the morning, in the evening or during poor weather. The Bike to Work Scheme covers:

  • Front bike lights
  • Rear bike lights
  • Dynamo lighting systems
  • White front reflectors
  • Spoke reflectors

A practical commuting set-up will normally include a white front light and a red rear light. Rechargeable lights can be convenient for regular journeys, but you should check their battery level before leaving home.

Reflective accessories can provide additional visibility, particularly when cycling through busy areas or on poorly lit roads.

Bike Locks and Chains

Bicycle locks and chains are also covered by the Bike to Work Scheme.

Choosing a suitable lock is particularly important when leaving your bicycle outside an office, train station, shopping area or other public location. The right lock will depend on:

  • Where you normally leave your bike
  • How long it will be unattended
  • The value of the bicycle
  • Whether there is a secure bicycle parking area
  • How easily you can carry the lock

For better protection, secure the bicycle frame to a fixed object. Where possible, avoid locking only the front wheel, as some wheels can be removed quickly.

Browse our bike locks and chains. You can also read our guides on how to lock your electric bike and how to choose an e-bike lock.

Bags, Panniers and Luggage Carriers

Carrying a laptop, work clothes, lunch or personal belongings can be difficult without the correct storage. The scheme covers approved luggage equipment, including:

  • Panniers
  • Bicycle bags
  • Luggage carriers
  • Straps for safely securing luggage

Panniers attach to a bicycle rack and can help keep weight off your back. They are particularly useful for longer commutes or for riders carrying heavier items.

Smaller frame or handlebar bags may be more suitable for essentials such as keys, a phone, a wallet or a compact repair kit.

Browse bicycle bags and electric bike accessories available from Pogo Cycles.

Bicycle Pumps and Repair Equipment

A puncture or loose component can quickly interrupt your journey. Carrying a few basic repair items can help you deal with minor problems or get your bike ready for a repair shop.

Approved equipment can include:

  • Bicycle pumps
  • Puncture repair kits
  • Cycle tool kits
  • Tyre sealant

A compact pump can be carried in a bag or attached to the bicycle frame. For home maintenance, a larger floor pump may make it easier to check and adjust tyre pressure regularly.

Browse our selection of bicycle pumps.

Mirrors, Mudguards and Other Safety Accessories

Some other useful commuting accessories may also qualify under the scheme.

Bicycle mirrors

Mirrors can help you monitor traffic behind you without turning your head as frequently. They can be particularly useful on urban roads and during longer journeys.

Browse bicycle mirrors.

Mudguards and skirt guards

Mudguards help reduce the amount of water and dirt thrown onto you and your bicycle. This can make everyday commuting more comfortable during wet weather.

Skirt guards help prevent loose clothing from becoming caught in the rear wheel.

Bells and horns

A bicycle bell or approved bulb horn allows you to make pedestrians and other road users aware of your presence when necessary.

Reflective clothing

Approved reflective clothing can improve your visibility to other road users, particularly in low-light conditions.

You can browse more bicycle accessories to find useful additions for your daily journeys.

Can You Buy Accessories Without Buying a Bike?

Revenue’s current guidance describes new safety equipment as covered if it is purchased with the bicycle. This means you should not assume that an accessories-only purchase will qualify under the tax exemption.

Check with your employer or scheme administrator before requesting a quotation containing accessories without a bicycle. Their process may also require all approved items to be included in one order.

When preparing a new Bike to Work order, it is best to choose your essential helmet, lights, lock and commuting equipment at the same time as your bicycle.

Which Accessories Are Not Covered?

The scheme is intended to cover new bicycles and specified bicycle safety equipment. It does not automatically cover every cycling-related product.

Items that do not fall within Revenue’s approved safety-equipment categories may not qualify. These could include:

  • General fitness trackers
  • Nutrition products
  • Decorative bicycle accessories
  • Non-cycling clothing
  • Car-mounted bicycle carriers
  • Products intended mainly for leisure rather than bicycle safety or commuting
  • Replacement components that are not included within the approved categories

Product availability on a cycling website does not necessarily mean that the item is eligible for the scheme.

Check your quotation carefully and speak to your employer or scheme provider where eligibility is unclear.

Pogo Cycles Electric Bikes

Electric bikes, or e-bikes, offer numerous benefits that make them an increasingly popular mode of transportation. We provide an eco-friendly alternative to cars, reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner air. E-bikes also offer a cost-effective solution for commuting, as they require less maintenance and no fuel compared to traditional vehicles. Additionally, we provide cycling accessible to a broader range of people, including those who may find conventional biking physically challenging, by providing an extra boost from the electric motor. This can lead to improved physical fitness, reduced traffic congestion, and more enjoyable and efficient travel.

Life is better on two wheels, especially when they're electric.
